From Jon Campbell:

I have taken over the Secchi disk committee which falls under Water Quality and am trying to identify current volunteers who are, and have been, taking measurements and sending them in. In addition, I am looking for Secchi disk volunteers for locations that don’t have anyone taking the measurements. Past history on who has done this eludes the Board so we are starting from scratch building this information and our program!

For those who don’t know, Secchi disk measurements indicate water clarity. An 8”, all white or black and white disk disk is lowered into the lake on a cord with depth markings on it. It is lowered until it can no longer be seen by the observer. Measurements should be done twice a month June through September between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on a calm, sunny day. They are recorded on a sheet and ultimately sent to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.

There are 10 spots around the lake where this is done. We all know how significant water clarity is. It’s of vital importance we continue to maintain these checks. Please let me know as soon as possible if:

– you currently are a Secchi disk volunteer, have a disk and want to continue,
– you have the disk but no longer take any readings,
– you want to be a Secchi disk volunteer.

We will make sure you have the equipment/training you need and really appreciate your assistance in helping us track this critical measure of water quality.

Message from Bob Karls, Water Quality Chair:

In the recent fall edition of The Cedar Log, which everyone should have received, I discussed my attendance at the 2016 Aquatic Invasive Species conference held in St. Cloud. I mentioned I had seen pictures of what Starry Stonewort, one of the newer invasive species hitting Minnesota, had done to Lake Koronis. MN Lakes and Rivers Advocates uploaded onto YouTube one of the videos shown at this conference.

Please take a moment and watch this educational, informative video. It’s short but will help you see what aquatic invasive species can do to a lake and why we must maintain our vigilance and protect Cedar along with all the other lakes in our state.
