Spring 2016 Newsletter

NOTICE:  The Norway Lake Association will be harvesting curly leaf pondweed (CLP) under the terms of a DNR permit this spring.  If CLP is growing within 150′ of your shoreline, you may direct that the association not harvest the vegetation.  Please email if this is your preference.  In doing so, please provide your address and identifying property characteristics visible from the lake.

The purpose of the Norway Lake Association of Cass County….

is to protect and improve the lake ecosystem for the benefit of all who enjoy time on or near the waters of Norway Lake and Norway Brook. Doing so requires the support of all who live in the Norway Lake watershed and an active association membership. With your new or continuing membership we can strengthen the association and our ability to enhance water quality in the Norway Lake system.

Membership Meeting: Sat, June 4, 10:00 a.m., Pine River Depot

Hello to all, members and non-members alike. To the membership, I say thank you for your ongoing support in our efforts to enhance Norway Lake’s ecosystem, esthetics and recreational opportunities. To non-members, I ask that you strongly consider joining 90 of your friends and neighbors who’s membership and tax-deductible contributions make possible the ongoing work of controlling curly leaf pondweed and other nuisance weed growth.

Last year, through the financial support of members and other community residents, we were able to harvest 250,000 pounds of weeds from the waters of Norway Lake. Curly Leaf Pondweed was harvested from 12 acres and native plants from an additional 15-20 acres. Many residents have told us that they were able to travel to areas of the lake throughout the summer they hadn’t been able to visit for many, many years.

But our work has just begun. are just beginning this work and learned a lot last summer about operating and maintaining the harvester and some of the techniques that make more for the efficient use of our time on the water.

2016 Membership is once again just $40 and covers all individuals in a household. Please note that for the purpose of voting on association matters, the by-laws provide for one vote per membership. Additional memberships may be purchased providing additional voting privileges.

General membership dues support association operations including mailing costs, website fees, water quality testing, July 4 boat parade and the Take a Kid fishing program. Dues may also fund a very small portion of the cost of controlling curly leaf pondweed but we depend on additional donations to complete that work and the harvesting of other lake weeds.
