A Message from our PLA President
A Message from our New President by Tom Rice
I am honored to be selected as President of the Pokegama Lake Association and will take this responsibility seriously. Our PLA bylaws state that our mission “is to help preserve and protect Pokegama Lake and its environs (including but not limited to Pokegama, Little Pokegama, Jay Gould, Little Jay Gould, and Backwater lakes) together with the wetlands and aquifers, and to enhance the water quality, recreational, and aesthetic features of the lakes for both present and future generations.” The PLA is presented with ever-changing concerns and challenges as the demographics and dynamics of our lake fluctuate. It is important to let our defined purpose and objective drive and support our actions and decisions.
Growing up on a farm in North Dakota has given me an appreciation of the importance of responsible stewardship of our clean air, soil and water resources. I have a business degree from the University of North Dakota and 40+ years of experience in Materials Management including purchasing, contract administration, logistics and supervision. My wife Marta and I live on the lake year-round. Our cabin is located northeast of the island on Sunset Trail. We have enjoyed many beautiful sunsets and look forward to many more.
As I step into the job of President, I will actively solicit ideas, opinions and suggestions from everyone in our membership. The PLA has more than 200 households, with many shared concerns and unique situations. Our organization is only effective and viable with representation, support and participation from the membership. I strongly urge the continued involvement of long-term members, as well as participation from our newer members. There is opportunity for all levels of commitment.
