INVASIVE SPECIES UPDATE –November 2018–End of Season
Bad News: Eurasian watermilfoil was found by MN DNR on 9-13-2017 very close to Whitefish Chain in the waters just below dam at Crosslake.
Good News: No Eurasian milfoil has been found in the Chain itself.
NO NEW INVASIVE PLANTS IN WHITEFISH CHAIN
Surveys done in July 2018 and again in August 2018 located no new invasive plant species on the Whitefish Chain.
WAPOA pays Professional Lake Management to do surveys in July and August on the Whitefish Chain looking for invasive plants at the locations most at risk for new plant invasions. Those are the months when it is most easily found.
The Whitefish Chain has had zebra mussels since 2013. There was a variable response this year–some lakes seeing more zebra mussels on equipment , others not as many.
Now at the end of 2018 virtually every one on the Whitefish Chain is seeing zebra mussels on equipment that was in the water all summer.
Looking ahead to 2019, it is time to think about using foot protection when wading or swimming –especially for children since they are in the water so much.
Boats and motors are best removed from the water after each use. That takes care of the exterior surface of the boat and motor. However, the motor should be variously tipped up for removal at the access, then back to vertical after out of the water to drain retained water, then tipped up again for travel. That will help empty the motor’s internal cooling system of water which contains zebra mussel veligers.
